viking fridays – turn the spell.

January 23, 2009

I know a sixth
It will save me if a man
Cut runes on a sapling’ s Roots
With intent to harm
It turns the spell
The hater is harmed, not me.

- The sixth charm, from The Hávamál

I am not sure why, but today I feel invincible.  I don’t know, it isn’t like this week was any more special than any other week (in many ways, news at work was less than positive, to be honest), but for one thing.

I seem to have great clarity of thought, and my focus is very sharp indeed.

I know what I have to do – some things will be put by the wayside, to leave more time for what is truly important.  It is in my hands.

Perhaps that is it then – I feel as though no one can harm me.

No one can break my conviction.

So my message today is not profound or deep – I merely want to pass this vibe on to you, so that you, too, will not be harmed.

If any try to harm you, the spell shall be turned back upon them.

There is nothing you can’t do.

I wear a charm much like this one, and when I do, I feel unstoppable.  I pass that on to you.

With this hammer – Mjollnir – you can level mountains.

You are unstoppable, and no one can harm you.

    I think Olaf Thunderfröck’s has one of those Hammers of Mjollnir in his Viking toolbox.

    Comes in handy when building drakars to go invade England with.

    Nyaaargh! .

    I love the whole Norse thing with Thor & Mjollnir and so forth.

    I found this picture when searching for the one I have:

    http://www.hammerofthorkindred.org/art/130929kPro_w.jpg

    That is just totally awesome, isn’t it?

  3. Friar on January 24th, 2009 10:45 am

    @Brett

    That photo shows what happens if you mis-use the Power of the Hammer of Mjollnir!

    Don’t forget these lesser-known Norse tools:

    - The Screwdriver of Krûll-Dor
    - The Tape Measure of Ætanakàar
    - The Shop-Vac of Krillnylckk

    @Friar,

    You forgot the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch…

    Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, “Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.” And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals … Now did the Lord say, “First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.”

    Dude, you’ve been into the weed again, haven’t you. Geez, that stuff will kill you.
    Have a coffee and a beer and join the rest of us in the real world.
    I think you suffer from bi-polar. Wear mittens, the north pole is cold this time of year.

    ARTHUR:
    You got us all worked up!
    TIM:
    Well, that’s no ordinary rabbit!
    ARTHUR:
    Ohh.
    TIM:
    That’s the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!
    ROBIN:
    You tit! I soiled my armour I was so scared!
    TIM:
    Look, that rabbit’s got a vicious streak a mile wide! It’s a killer!

  9. Friar on January 24th, 2009 7:23 pm

    Ahhh, yes.

    The sorcerer.

    There are those that call him….TIM!

    Brett,

    I’m going to use this power tomorrow, okay?

    Today I was beaten up by the Spirit of Christmas Trees Dry and Brittle. Oof.

    Should have come by here earlier to juice up on unstoppability. I’m stopped. ;)

    Friar,

    I love the The Tape Measure of Ætanakàar. LOL.

    Is it better than The Tape Measure of Some Electric Company, which I have in my purse right now?

    I’ll take two.

    Off to have the champagne which you know, I drove in my minivan to get, uphill and full-throttle both ways…

    Regards,

    Kelly

    @Friar,

    That line becomes even funnier if you have a friend named Tim, and it becomes like a “Normism” all throughout high school – every time he enters the room, “There are those that call him… TIM!”

    (Well, maybe it wasn’t so funny for Tim.)

    @Karen JL,

    You know, I had to go dig up this movie because of all of this and I’ll be watching it today…

    @Alex,

    Amazing, what can be in a word, eh? Off to save the world once again!

    Hahah! Love how the conversation totally derailed, and because a Monty-Python skit.

    What was this post originally about, anyway?

    …something about a hammer? (Thor Comics, maybe?) :-)

  17. Brett on January 25th, 2009 11:23 am

    @Friar,

    Hey, so long as everyone’s having fun, what’s the difference?

    Throw in a couple of 20-foot inflatable gorillas with big bananas, and we’ve got a party…

  18. Karen JL on January 25th, 2009 3:04 pm

    I love a gorilla with a big banana. :)

    Well, Ms. JL, you’re in luck, welcome to the Happy Gorilla’s Big Banana Emporium :)

  20. Friar on January 25th, 2009 5:18 pm

    @Karen

    If the Banana Emporium is out of gorillas, would a couple of irate chimps do?

    (AECKKK!!!!)

    Oh, no. Sent three comments to moderation here yesterday, and forgot to email you. Let’s see what happens with this. If it goes bye-bye too, you’ll be hearing from me!

    @Kelly,

    You have been rescued from Niflheim (or Hel – I’ve seen it both ways) – hopefully the invincibility worked better for you in real life than it did against the evil Akismet…

  23. Friar on January 25th, 2009 7:41 pm

    @Brett

    Hey…all of the sudden, Kelly’s comments appeared in between ours.

    It’s like Loki was messing with us, and sent them to Valhala and brought them back.

    Those Viking Gods! You never know what they’ll do next.

  24. Brett on January 25th, 2009 8:02 pm

    @Friar,

    It was either the Viking Gods, or the Inflatable Gorilla Gods. Probably didn’t sacrifice enough bananas…

  25. Kelly on January 25th, 2009 8:17 pm

    Brett,

    You have no idea. ‘Fraid today I’ve been utterly stopped. Ouch.

    & if this comment doesn’t show up… ’bout right for the speed things are going.

    I think I’ll be unstoppable tomorrow, K?

    Did you forget to renew? Did they kick you out? Have you decided to abandon us and go back to nature?

    The spirit of the Friar moves from blog to blog, I think ;)

    He & I were talking about hiring ourselves out as a tag-team comment service, kind of like Statler and Waldorf from The Muppet Show.

    (“Boring blog comments got you down? For only $49.95 per month, the Inflatable Gorilla Comment Squad will liven things up for you!”)

    Hi Karen! Glad we didn’t scare you away with talk of inflatable gorillas :)

    I am not the only one who is unstoppable – no one can stop the mighty Wonder Woman!!! Go forth, and do good things.

  33. Jenny on February 16th, 2009 2:29 pm

    It is nice to feel invincible once in a while, as long as it’s genuine. Some people like to think or make others think they are invincible when they aren’t. Some people are afraid to be invincible. There is something about the excerpt you chose to write about from the Havamal. It speaks to me and intrigues me more so than any of the other Viking Fridays posts. I am not sure why but it defintely has the wheels turning in my head!

    Jenny’s last blog post..Something To Believe In

  34. Brett on February 17th, 2009 7:27 pm

    Jenny,

    I think it is interesting too, because there are times in each of our lives when we truly *are* invincible. When we are in love, for instance.

    When we make that shot in a game of some kind. When we ace a test. When we share a moment with a child.

    Those are the times when we cannot be struck down, by anything.

Got something to say?
