viking fridays – a story of give and take.

January 30, 2009

Guest post by Jack.

Hello.  My name is Jack.  I work at The Factory.

Today, I am going to tell you a story of give and take.  The story doesn’t involve any Vikings, but it is Friday, so I had to call it something, right?

First, let me tell you a couple of things about me.

I get shit done.  My thoughts are very non-linear, probably bordering on insanity.  I work in bursts, and when I am working, I am extremely effective and efficient.  In between bursts, I tend to take breaks where I will do something completely different.

So, I might work on a task for an hour, and then read about some new computer technology that will help me do my job even better.  Or I might work on my blog – have you heard of it?  It is called Project Mayhem.  Perhaps I might even stop by your blog and say hello, talk about 20-foot tall inflatable gorillas, and so on.

I know I probably shouldn’t do that, but I figure it is give and take.  Give me some leeway to dick around a bit, and I will answer phone calls and do work after hours and on the weekend – free of charge, I might add.

Anyway, like I said, I get shit done.  I get more shit done by 9:00 am than most people can do in two days.  I believe in ROWE – Results Only Work Environment.

The Factory, however, is stuck in the 1950’s – they are a TOWE, or a Time Only Work Environment.  Thus, they don’t really care if you are effective and efficient – they just want to know that you are working *only* on *their* stuff, 8 hours a day.

If you get your shit done by noon, they don’t want you to take the afternoon off to be with your kids.  Fuck no, they want you to find something else to do, because everything has to be done yesterday.  Holy shit, we can’t have happy, well rested employees now, can we?  We don’t pay you for what you get done, we pay you for how many hours you push The Wheel of Pain.

The old boys say The Factory used to be a great place to work, and they even bought you a lobstah once in a while.

But not now.

They won’t even give you coffee at meetings.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, the place where I get the oil changed on my car gives you free cappuccino and croissants while you wait.

Right now, you’re probably thinking, “Jack, get to the fucking point.”

Okay, like I said, this is a story of give and take.

Yesterday we got a new internet filter at The Factory.

We can’t afford to fix the fucking stairs, but we got a new internet filter.

I am Jack’s complete lack of surprise.

Priorities, you see.

Somebody, somewhere gets to tick a little box beside a list that says:

  1. Install new internet filter
  2. ???
  3. Profit!

Congratulations, morale-killer.

Here’s where I get to the punchline.

I have given freely of my time in the evenings and on weekends, and missed time with my family.

You have taken away flexibility that helped me to do my job better and made it somewhat tolerable.

Unfortunately, in spite of Tyler’s best efforts, I cannot access my blog anymore nor the blogs of some of my friends, or anything to do with Google (so, Docs, Gmail etc.), or any social networking during business hours.

I am Jack’s inflamed sense of rejection.

This means I won’t be able to talk to you anymore during the day, so I must apologize – it is nothing personal.  I’ll still talk to you at night, and on weekends.

That’s okay though.  As Tyler says, you’re not your fucking job.  And like I said, I get shit done.  And just think of all the shit I’m going to get done by completely ignoring work, when I’m not at work.

What’s that?

I’m sorry.  My cell phone doesn’t ring after the end of business hours anymore, and oh, the firewall on my home network won’t allow connections to the VPN anymore.  It must be a problem with my ISP.

One more thing.  There’s a new rule of Fight Club.

Do not talk about The Factory, until you no longer work at The Factory.

Which won’t be long, because when I put my mind to something 100 percent, I get shit done.

I am Jack’s smirking revenge.

Up until now, I’ve just been fucking around.

    @Brett

    I hate companies that treat professionals like hourly workers. It’s not like we’re assembly line workers, stamping out so many widgets per hour and every minute counts.

    No. In the REAL world, professionals who deal with long-term projects are treated like SALARIED employees. A REAL boss will say “I don’t care how you work, as long as you get XXX done by this date YYY. And they leave you alone to go work at it.

    In the REAL world, the staff are paid to get the JOB DONE. Some days they might slack off. Some days they might bust their butt. But at the end of the day, it’s what they’ve ACCOMPLISHED that matters. Now how many hours they put in.

    That’s why many of us went to school for all those years and studied and got degrees. So that we’d be treated like adults, and have flexible jobs where we’re trusted to work as professionals. And not get yelled at for not cranking out so many widgets per hour.

    At least…that’s how it usually is…in the REAL world.

    Funny, how micromanaging companies think that by cracking down (e.g restricting internet use or getting rid of coffee), they’ll increase productivity.

    When it’s actually quite the OPPOSITE.

    Whereas before, one might have been willing to put in that bit of extra effort or unpaid overtime to get things done. Out of a sense of loyalty and professional pride.

    Whereas now…people will tend to “Work to rule”. Do EXACTLY what the job requires, and not ONE IOTA more.

    (*Insert sarcastic clapping sound here*)

    Good going, management. Way to motivate your staff.

    Oh, Jack,

    What a terribly sad story. I’m really sorry.

    I was just saying to A Friend of Jack’s last night, that flitting around online is the new smoke break, or gab around the water cooler. Most of us don’t do much of either anymore, and any reasonable company would see that a few minutes out of an hour spent loosening up online, is just enabling to to tighten back up for another fifty minutes of concentrated work.

    Every work expert says walk away from the work for ten minutes of an hour to refresh your brain. Why on Earth do they care if you take your walk in cyberspace?

    Sorry, Jack. I’ll miss you 9-to-5. :(

    Hang in there, I hear your friend Brett has a lot of great ideas in the works.

    Regards,

    Kelly

    “Gonna have me some fun, gonna have me some fun”
    Look up the quote and you’ll understand Brett’s current mentality.

    I really feel Jack’s pain, I really do. I too work at a place where 8-5 means YOU MUST BE WORKING THE WHOLE TIME YOU ARE AT WORK! Or at least look like you are working. I get more done before and after work than I do at work but I still have to show up for 9 hours.

    But, (big fat hairy butt….I’ve seen Brett’s, its big and fat and hairy and he was answering the phone)….I am the HGIC where I work (the Head Geek In Charge). Now don’t get me wrong, if you cruz porn you will be fired. And I have fired 3 people since I have been here. But I am also very lenient. If you want to read the news, get your personal email, I don’t care. If you are NOT getting your work done and we see that you are spending 6 hours on Hotmail….warning.

    I have been asked several times to UP the web filter to RESTRICT sites and LIMIT web usage. But I don’t. I say I do… but I don’t. They ask for the web usage report, so I give them one…. from February 2005 and change the date. I am not a dick or a tyrant or a jerk. Abuse the freedom I have given you and you will however find that I am an asshole.

    Jack works at a crappy place with crappy IT people and crappy management.
    Eyeteaguy works at a crappy place where I am the IT people and crappy managment.

    I frakking hate IT people, I really do. Just because you have the power DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO USE IT. Treat people like professionals and they will react like professionals.

    The 50’s business model does not work in today’s world because we no longer work in the 50’s. You want to know why IBM used to wear white shirts and ties and now wear jeans and t-shirts. Because that is what their customers wore and now wear. They adapted, grew are still profitable.

    Anyway, there it is.

    Yup, Jack, you gotta get your hours in. And somebody else is using their hours to come up with Draconian policy like this. When will companies figure out that empowering employees to make their own decisions, even if it’s about how to manage their own time, is the best policy? Rhetorical question.

    The factory literally doesn’t know Jack.

    Side note to Brett: Jack’s got a really great voice for someone who doesn’t write a lot. :)

    Hey Jack,
    I’ve got this really good friend. And we’ve been talking a lot lately. About some realy important things…like focus and zero-ing in on the number one things and…Jack…I got a feeling…that you might want to meet up with him because he could give you a few pointers…cause my friend…

    He is focused now like a laser beam

    and those things can burn…..

    :)

    And you know what..maybe this isn’t such a bad, sad story after all. You never know what that last piece of straw is going to be.

    I’m glad I retired before my Company got to the point described in this post, but they were heading there. For a long time I put in the extra time necessary to do what I needed to do for my work and I always got some return for my investment of time — until the last 3 or 4 years before I left. And I left 2 years earlier than I had planned.

    Jack should read the 4 Hour Workweek, there is a section at the back that will prove to Jack that he can absolutely walk away. I read it again last night and thought of many people I know that need this advice. Tell Jack that in general companies are stupid, the work force is not designed for people to be happy and live rich fulfilling lives. I think they must have modeled it after prison only with pay.

    Howdy folks! Jack had to work late at The Factory :) so he asked me if I could answer your comments today.

    Thanks for all the great comments, and I hope that all of you had a good day – it wasn’t quite the same without you… :(

    @Friar,

    Yeah, it kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it. I mean, some of us have actually worked on projects where people could have been killed, each and every day. But we’re not trusted to have internet access lest we can’t be self-disciplined enough to write a document…

    I don’t get it sometimes.

    @Kelly,

    Jack missed you too, today – but he’ll be sure to stop in and say hello after close of business, every day.

    And I’m hanging in there, both for me and Jack – for you’re right, lots of good ideas here (and opportunities – a job interview coming up this week).

    @Betsy,

    I like that – the factory literally doesn’t know Jack. Isn’t that the truth.

    And thanks – Jack’s voice will be coming out more often, but in a different way – very soon. Keep your eyes open, he has a lot to say.

    @Wendi,

    Jack knows that friend too, and the friend realizes that this is perhaps a message, an opportunity, in disguise. A chance to really say goodbye to the 80 percent, focus on the 20 percent. The last piece of straw is most likely in his hands even now. And that’s a good thing :)

    @Mike,

    In all seriousness and without reference to Jack, it is amazing how things have changed in the name of “progress” and “profit”. The dehumanization of companies. I’ve often heard the executive say “people are our most valuable resource”.

    Then show it, for Odin’s sakes.

    @Karen,

    Jack knows 4HWW very well, as he borrowed it from me. I have read it too, and it is time to re-read the most important parts, especially that section at the back that you mention.

    You know, you are right. It is possible to walk away. And be happy.

    Once again, thanks to everyone who stopped in today – I’ll pass your good words on to Jack, and I know he will enjoy them as much as I did.

    I wonder if anyone else got that one… actually, while doing the driveway, and thinking about Tor http://www.torproject.org/ I got to thinking about something.

    I have a fairly technical post in the can right now on Skype, and maybe I’ll do one about Tor and anonymous browsing (you know, in case you’re ever behind the Great Firewall of China).

    Then I thought, maybe I’ll call it Project Mayhem or Tyler’s Tips or something like that. Ways to make your computer work for you, rather than the other guy.

    It sort of ties in with that other computer consulting thing that I *still haven’t put up on the Hire Me page* (bad Brett)

  13. steph on January 31st, 2009 10:07 am

    Dear Bad Brett and his alter ego(s):

    The trick is to let go of the Factory *now,* before you leave, even. Let that shit roll over your head. The moment you let any of it get to you, the moment you know what’s going on and start to hate it, that’s when it begins to defeat you, break down your focus, suck your energy down a different tube from where it should be going.

    The moment you can convince yourself that this is your existence now only because it’s serving a higher purpose as you prepare to launch is the moment you become untouchable and truly focused. But be warned: the moment you pat yourself on the back for getting shit done before it’s *really* done is the moment you slow down.

    If you can truly let go and make all the space available for your goal, then sooner than you think, you will be standing in a home in NZ saying, “This is the house that Jack built. I am Jack’s fucking triumph.”

    And we’ll all be there holding your hand as you stare out the window.

    @steph,

    Fear not – this post was Jack’s way of doing that very thing (hence the new rule of Fight Club).

    Jack did a lot of thinking. There will be much streamlining (starting this weekend), a lot of it tying in to that sort of bucket list that I/Jack sent you a while ago. You know what my biggest dreams are – what is really interesting about this whole development is this:

    The space and time that I used to use to “take breaks” at work, to surf to blogs and so forth – while I will miss it – will now be used to focus on those core things, because most of that stuff (NZ plans, business planning, Jack’s writing) can be done *without* a net connection.

    Jack will send you an email later today to explain it ;)

    Jack,
    Come to the light side. Some people never learn that tightening the reins and using a crop doesn’t exactly improve a mount’s disposition or encourage loyalty. I like the carrots and apples model myself. And an occasional sugar cube.

  19. Brett on January 31st, 2009 5:16 pm

    @Ed,

    The additional funding will help for sure. The nature of these things, though, tends to be like when that famous Canadian coffee chain raises prices because of a bad crop in Costa Rica – the coffee beans start to flow again, but the prices never come back down.

    The same will be true here, no matter how much they fix up the place, Jack will still be a bird in a gilded cage. I know that sounds negative, but it really isn’t about the state of repair of the various buildings around the site. There are ROWE’s out there, it is up to Jack to find one and work there until he does his own thing.

    @Janice,

    Eventually, with focus, he will (still looking at the work of the Men!)

    There it is.

  24. Eyeteaguy on February 1st, 2009 11:44 am

    My last comment came out all arrogant like.

    What I was trying to say is that I am not unusual. People of my generation and ilk, like Brett, Jack et al see the web as a tool. We also understand how to work and get the job done.

    People of the previous generation (Generation W?) do not understand the web, technology or the speed at which it moves. They see it as a waste and can’t keep up. They try to restrict its use because (and listen carefully) because given the choice they would fuck around all day and not get any work done. This is a fact, this is true because that is what they tell me. I have sat in about 20 meetings where these old folks say that if I don’t restrict it they will cruz porn all day long. What!?!

    So since you can’t control yourself, and you assume we cannot control ourselves I have to spend part of my precious and shrinking budget to stop you. That makes little sense.

    To be honest, I cannot wait for the older guys to pack it in. Then we can take over and really show what we can do.

    And don’t get me started about Generation Y. You are not “entitled” to anything. Work for it like the rest of us.

    Eyeteaguy

    Eyeteaguy’s last blog post..Wanna Save the Planet?

  25. Brett on February 1st, 2009 11:57 am

    I didn’t think it sounded arrogant at all :)

    I do agree with what you said about the folks who try to restrict the use of the tech, though. I actually had people at work get upset with me because I changed the wallpaper on my desktop… wha?

    And then I watch the way they work… *click-click* search for a file *click click* search for a file…

    Painful to watch. Ever hear of “Find” before?

    Or when doing cut & paste or copy & paste… using the mouse and the icons instead of “ctrl-c ctrl-x ctrl-v”… I tell you, I want to grab the controls and do it myself!

    People who don’t understand the difference between minimizing a window and closing it. Closing an application completely when switching to another, then reopening it, finding the file they had before, pasting in whatever…

    *sigh* you probably think I’m kidding about this, but I am not. These are people who are making megabucks and making decisions on how to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.

    Now it’s my turn to say something arrogant. The people at this company are what we would call technology workers, and the company is a high-tech company.

    If you don’t know how to attach a file to an email (and there are people who can’t, so they hide behind administrative assistants) – you shouldn’t be working there. Yet they are there… the same sort of folks who used to laugh that they couldn’t set the time on their VCR’s… making decisions that affect the lives of millions.

    (An aside here – I never really understood that. Why would anyone admit to being too stupid to be able to read an instruction manual?)

    Vice-presidents who barely finished high-school…

    These are just a few of hundreds of examples of why Jack can get his work done before 9:00 am. And that’s why we are not, and never will be, in the same class as a company like Google or IBM.

    Of course, not everyone is like this – there are people from all generations who are tech saavy. Tech visionaries and so forth.

    We just need to work for a company made up of those folks, Eyeteaguy!

  26. Janice Cartier on February 1st, 2009 12:01 pm

    Dear Eye,
    It may not be generational. Bourbon Street draws people from all over and all ages who are so “restricted” in their “normal ” lives they just go crazy when finally given permission.

    While the locals understand that there is plenty of time to get to the Absinthe House to meet our friends once we deliver our work to the client.

    Prohibition… did no one in IT study history?

    Alcohal, a drug and an addiction.
    The Internet a tool and can be a time waster.
    Sorry to say but your analogy is pretty thin.

    I have a Honours BA in Political Science with a minor in history. I probably know more about US history than 90% of Americans. But only because I am interested in you and your effects and affects on Canada.

    I may be Eyeteayguy but I am not an IT guy, Big difference.

    And it is generational and I am generalizing. You will see, look at the stunning success of the people of my generation who are in charge. PayPal, eBay, Google etc. They work when they want, work bloody hard. Are creative but have stunning business acumen. The Worldcom, Tyco, Enron folks have shown us what they can do, thanks very much and I attribute the current crisis to these people. And you are paying for it. Good. Maybe you will learn something before you go out to pasture.

    I think that you folks are saying the same thing only from a different angle – ban alcohol, it goes underground.

    Restrict access to parts of the internet at work, people learn how to use proxy servers ;)

    Some folks get it (i.e. we, the enlightened ones), some folks don’t (many members of the “old boys club”).

  30. Janice Cartier on February 1st, 2009 2:40 pm

    Jack is completely misunderstanding the motives of the Company.

    The Company is merely protecting Jack from websites that might incite emotion and interfere with Jack’s complacent stability. It’s not a matter of trust, it’s a matter of keeping Jack every bit as happy as he needs to be without risking any dangerous ebullience or work dampening sadness.

    The Company would prefer that Jack continue working after hours – not for OUR benefit, but for Jack’s own health. Our highly compensated researchers have determined that so-called “over-worked” employees are less likely to have a social life that could lead to the aforementioned sadness and/or ebullience.

    It’s not too late, Jack. Your Company still cares about you. Shun those negative thoughts and you WILL be happy.

    We miss you, Jack.. we care about you and have your best interests always at the forefront of our minds. Who knows you better than we do? Who has spent more time with you? Not your friends, not your family – we know you best and we know what is best for you. Trust us – your acceptable level of complacent happiness is your to keep!

    Disclaimer: Actual happiness levels may not match expectations. Not all employees will achieve minimum levels. The Company defines “minimum happiness” as a mild feeling that nothing is particularly wrong and that any negative conditions (like broken stairs) aren’t worth worrying about. We actively encourage “out of sight, out of mind” and “not my problem – it doesn’t affect me!” thinking in all employees.

    Aw, poor Jack. :-(

    I can relate to this so much I about died:

    “I get shit done. My thoughts are very non-linear, probably bordering on insanity. I work in bursts, and when I am working, I am extremely effective and efficient. In between bursts, I tend to take breaks where I will do something completely different.”

    And I immediately thought of how it used to be at my old firm, which I’m pretty sure is a distant cousin of the factory…. and how I would spend like three hours a day trying to bill my time. Because what would take me five minutes was something I should be billing half an hour for, and so on. And I’ve never been good at the New Corporate Math.

    One of my friends just got cut off from the internet at work too. And since they already read her emails, we’ve taken to communicating telepathically throughout her work day. Perhaps you two should join forces and start an ecourse on how to do that — after hours, of course. ;-)

    Jack figured that would be one thing you’d understand, because he’s probably almost as batshit crazy as you are, at times…

    Unless your friend’s account was completely cut off, Jack could help her ;)

    Funny you mention a course – always interested to get something positive out of these situations, I/Jack will try my/his hand at a kind of “tech tips for Project Mayhem” sort of thing.

    (Don’t worry, there won’t be any info here on bathtub explosives… just interesting ways to make tech work for you, to put your computer’s power back in your hands…)

  37. Amy on February 1st, 2009 6:21 pm

    Hmm… I’ll have to put her in touch with you. Right now, she is considering taking up knitting for her breaks. (They are told they must take two fifteen minute breaks per day.) You would have to meet her to know how scary it would be for her to take up knitting. It would be a bit like Friar saying he was going to take up Barbie Doll Clothesmaking. ;-)

    Bathtub explosives could also be interesting….

    @Amy & Friar,

    Heh heh, Barbie Doll Factory Uniforms – with “World Class” embroidered across the back :)

    @Eyeteaguy – I’m still laughing at that one too… anyway, better get back to work for The Company ;)

  42. Amy on February 1st, 2009 7:15 pm

    I think the uniforms should look like bowling shirts. ;-)

    Mer, Oh,,what was that? Sorry… I was over at Amy’s house catching up on some reading…you must hate that…I apologize…that’s as bad as people spelling my name wrong. Is Mer short for something? Wendi is short for WendiLynn, but that’s too long. :)

    Nice to meet you!

    I am sooooo glad you are working your way out of the Factory because I can’t stand you being there! If it weren’t for the far too much snow in Ontario (and the nasty carbon cost of random flights) I’d fly to NZ, demand someone give you a job, then fly to the Factory (direct, maybe with a helicopter) and rescue you, like right now!

    @Mer,

    Thank you (err, Jack thanks you…) – I’m glad you stopped in today.

    @Wendi,

    I owe you an update – I’ll see if I can get it to you tonight, but if I don’t, please forgive as I’m preparing for that job interview tomorrow ;)

    @Amy,

    We’re all talking about you (psss psss psss psss) but it’s all good.

    @Alex,

    Believe me, if you did that, I’d be forever indebted to you (imagine, your own Someday Assistant). Of course, if you had a helicopter, perhaps we could stop off in Spain on the way? I’ve never been there and…

  62. Wendi Kelly on February 4th, 2009 5:47 pm

    Depends on when he comes…we will be there shortly anyway…arriving in Canada soon by train for a bonfire…and a pole dance…we can leave right after by giant helicopter….

    Behind the times… or chronically underfunded! I’m sure if they could make us submit blood and urine samples each time we arrived at work, they’d be doing that already (ref. Gattaca)

  67. Friar on February 5th, 2009 1:28 am

    @Brett

    Wasn’t there rumors of urine/drug testing at the Factory? (I hear the reason it didn’t go thru is that it would be difficult to legally enforce). They’re probalby already be doing it now if they could get away with it.
