6 weeks 2 days.
September 15, 2009
That’s how long it has been since I posted.
You know what’s happened since then?
Lots.
I spent a lot of time with my wife and children, drinking wine in the sun, and we bought a puppy. A yellow lab named Walter. He’s really cute – just ask Uncle Friar.
I spent a lot of time thinking about important stuff, where I want to go, what I want to do – it became very clear – and I’ll be sharing that soon, at this space. Very soon (as in, sooner than 6 weeks 2 days!)
And my number of subscribers at this blog stayed pretty much the same.
(Thanks for not running away, folks.)
The lesson here is that we can go away when we need to go away, spend time thinking about stuff, and come back.
Technology need not enslave us.
Things will take care of themselves.
What did you do over the last 6 weeks?
(PS – I’m not picking on Dubya, I just liked the picture…)

Welcome back!
I want to know how the New Zealand plans are going!! Do tell!
Alex Fayle | Someday Syndrome’s last blog post..No, I Won’t Talk to You: Why Someday Syndrome Offers Email-Based Coaching
Thanks Alex! It’s good to be back.
I will give an update, but in a post (it’s worth a post, not just a comment!)
So good to hear from an old friend! Glad you’re back, I’ve missed your blogs! I totally understand though, I’ve been having long periods between my posts and have wondered if anyone still reads them!
Looking forward to new posts!
Jenny’s last blog post..Asking for a Miracle by the Pool
Brett,
I miss your uplifting ways here at 6 Weeks. Congrats on the puppy, though how you fit in just one more bit of craziness, I can’t imagine. No wonder blog-writing had to wait six weeks!
Can’t wait to hear more from you.
Regards,
Kelly
Well, since we’ve emailed a few times over that 6 weeks, it doesn’t feel as long, but I have missed your posts.
I’ve been pretty much up to work and nothing else, but I have made time for Colin and I to read together (we’re reading the Eragon series now, like the good nerds we are). I’ve also revamped my blog and taken EditQuest back from the malicious jerks who ruined it. I’m feeling much better about it now that it’s safer and redirected and since I can finally showcase my ebook that I worked so hard on. I’m still proud of that thing! I hope to blog more often, especially once I’m in England.
Until then, I’m working at the clinic and editing a book and some articles. I admit to being totally exhausted and drained. Rebecca noted it was ironic that I felt so shitty considering I work at a wellness clinic. But I’ve been detoxing a lot too.
Anyway, enough about me. I’m more or less caught up on you but I do want to hear more about your plans and read more posts from you!
Can’t wait.
PS. Did you get the mail I sent you yet?
steph’s last blog post..Free as a Bird
@Jenny,
Nice to hear from you too!!!
And the answer to your question is, “yes”. People still read your posts.
I’m looking forward to writing again, too – hope to see you here.
@Kelly,
I’ll do my best then to get things back on track. I can always rant over at Friar’s place if I need to blow off steam
or I can channel my “inner Tyler” the odd time here.
@steph,
Yes! I just got your mail today.
Thank you so much, my friend. That was very thoughtful of you and it means a great deal to me.
I love what you’ve done with your blog, and EQ fits really well in there. You should be proud of your ebook, it is very good indeed.
England. I wish you had room in your suitcase for me! You will have an awesome time over there, and things will come into clear focus for you.
Trust me, you will see.
I expect to have another post soon (I’ve got a couple drafted right now).
So glad you liked it! I thought of you when I read it, of course, and I thought Cathryn would appreciate it, too. I only hope it didn’t make you sad not getting to be there now but instead hopeful and excited for the time when you get to, er, tackle sheep. (!)
If I had a dime for every person who wished I could fit them in my suitcase, I’d have a suitcase or three big enough! I’d gladly take everyone.
Thanks for the compliments on EQ and the blog!
Hope your day has been splendid.
steph’s last blog post..Free as a Bird
Heck, no! It didn’t make me sad at all.
Rather, it threw five or six more big logs on the fire under my ass to get me going.
My day has been splendid in a crazy sort of way
the sun is shining, the kids are playing and I’ve got some coffee brewing… I hope that you also had a great day.
Geez, some friend. I have to hear news from you on your blog. Wassa matta? Forget my phone number?
Just kidding, I’ve been up to my ass in alligators too so the fault is as much as mine as yours.
I hope the news means we will be neighbours again. That 6 hour drive for a beer is killing me.
Eyeteaguy
Brett, you were missed! I completely agree that the technology should not enslave us, rather it should serve our needs. Stepping away from our routines is a wonderful way to gain new perspective and give ourselves the space to explore, reflect, plan and dream. I look forward to the unveiling.
Glad you’re back, Brett. Congrats on the puppy; I hope Walter is bringing you all much joy.
(where’d the name come from, by the way?)
Hi Brett. Gee… I think you mentioned wine in your last post too. You’ve got your priorities straight — family comes first. If I had one, I’d be doing the same thing. I’d love to see pictures of the puppy. They don’t stay little and cute for long.
PS You didn’t have to drink all that wine BECAUSE you were spending so much time with your wife and children though, right…?
Davina’s last blog post..The Thyme of My Life
Hi Brett – I never even noticed you were going cos I wasn’t blogging either due to depression.
Like Alex, I’m looking forward to hearing more about how your New Zealand plans are shaping up.
Dearest Brett;
(Sob).
I MISSED you. Your whimsicaly posts continue to inspire the rest of us to achieve things above which we can only dream about.
I hung on to your every word, today, is if it was the last breath I’d ever take.
Tears of joy are quivering down my chin(s).
I didn’t do much in six weeks.
But it’s time for a change.
Next month, I’m seriously considering signing up my four precious children for Vegan-Origami. (Where we don’t make any animal shapes…that’s just exploiting them).
Faithfully yours,
Oprah-Mom
@Eyeteaguy,
Actually, you’ve heard all of it in prototypical form anyway (when you were up visiting, and on Skype) – I just need to get off my ass and finish it
And yes, there is a chance we may be neighbours again soon – stay tuned…
@Karen,
Thanks my friend. I missed being here, too. Perhaps there will be something for you in what I will have.
@Rebecca,
Thanks! The name… well, we always like to give “human names” to our pets (even though the last dog was named after a character from Dukes of Hazzard…)
Walter seemed to fit. Plus, I thought for my part, he’d be named after Clint Eastwood’s character in Gran Torino. “Walt” will be the grumpy old man saying “get off my lawn” someday to the neighbourhood kids, perhaps
@Cath,
I am glad that *you* are back at your blog too – I missed your writing. I’ve been enjoying the comments on your Canada post very much. This space will be the space to watch for updates on NZ – stay tuned.
@Oprah-Mom,
Things must be slow over at Friar’s blog, since you usually hang out there
either that or you’ve been drinking beer and watching Viking movies heh heh
Brett, you skipped my comment. Now I’m getting a complex
Davina’s last blog post..The Thyme of My Life
@Davina,
Ack!
(Or should I say, “ARRRR”, since it is Talk Like a Pirate Day…)
Sorry about that
obviously I had a *wee* bit too much wine because I had seen your comment, and then forgot to reply in the list.
Of course, you may take it to mean that I wanted to pay special attention to you
I’ll post a link to some recent photos on Picasa soon, so you can see Walt (I’ll put the link here, how does that sound? Or maybe on Twitter…)
No, I was sharing the wine with my wife (but not the kids!)
Oh, that’s good. I thought I might be in doghouse or something. But then again, if that’s where Walt is, then that wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Can’t wait to see pics. Cheers!
Davina’s last blog post..The Thyme of My Life
Oh, heck no… just a combination of wine and (more likely) my soon to be 40-year old brain
@Brett
I like how your dog won’t listen to you ,and will pull on the leash to stay with Uncle Friar when it’s bed time.
I’m proud, of how I’ve already corrupted your dog.
(Maybe that’s why you hide your kids from me when I come over).
Friar’s last blog post..Proof that Hippies are Alive and and Well on Twitter
Yeah Friar, you have corrupted poor Walt, haven’t you… well, at least he’s not drinking beer yet
Somehow I don’t think you are doing anything at all.
How is it that it takes you 6 weeks to write a post.
It takes Friar 3-4 days.
That means you owe us 24 posts Mister!
Hey, but I understand, you’re a busy guy.
Everyody can wait for your next pearl of wisdom.
And wait we will, we aren’t going anywhere.
Dammit.
Eyeteaguy
Don’t worry, Eyeteaguy.
I’ll be back in the saddle soon, you know how it is sometimes…
Children need tending to, and so on.
Know that there’ll be a post waiting for you, very soon.
Looking for something, yeah yeah, that’s it, looking for something.
Was it a giraffe? No, no, no, not a giraffe. Was it a hippopotumus? No, no, no, that’s silly. It was wasn’t a hippopotomus.
Oh, that’s it. I was looking for a new f***king post.
Eyeteaguy
You sound just like Charles M. Wolf, the episode was “Hare-less Wolf”, 1958, Friz Freleng did it…
Love that one… sorry, no new post yet heh heh…
All I hear are crickets.
They are actually a clever decoy as I sneak up behind you to GIVE YOU A SWIFT KICK IN THE ASS!
You realize my life has stalled and is now in danger of going into free fall because you have not doled out any advice to which I can live my life by.
If God had wanted to you post, he would have miracled your post up here.
Eyeteaguy
I’d tease you and say I was waiting another 6 weeks to reply to your comment, but you wrote such a nice comment at that other post (with Homer) that I couldn’t do that.
Thanks brother.
Hey Brett! New to your blog and followed you from Deep Friar.
The last 6 weeks here have been hectic. Farewells, engagements, dinners, lunches. Bushwalking in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park (Sydney, Australia), Bondi Beach Sculpture by the Sea, house hunting, and trying so desperately to keep up with my 6 year old’s hectic extra-curricular schedule.
Noted that you were planning a trip to NZ – ever been before? I grew up here in Australia but the Kiwis are like the cousins you pretend to hate even though they’re all top blokes and birds. Can’t wait to hear about your plans for it!
BourbonBird´s last blog ..Sculpture by the Sea
Brett,
To all of those who missed you for six weeks, I say try going over a year without your wisdom, wit and observations. It’s rather hellish.
Congrats on the Walter.
@BourbonBird,
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to stop by from Friar’s!
Wow, it sounds like your last 6 weeks was pretty hectic, but fun too.
Yes, we were very lucky to visit NZ in August of 2007, and it was amazing. We want to go back so very badly, and we will. It’s in the works right now… we need to see the green hills once again, smell the sulphur at Rotorua, and then head south (we didn’t get to South Island last time).
(I’d actually like to move there permanently, but that’s another story.)
My wife has been to Australia as well (before she met me!) as she has family there. So you know we’ll be going to your country at some point, too.
@Rita,
Thanks for the congrats on the little doggie, and welcome back.
I know at least *another* 6 weeks have passed since I posted this, but I’ve had a lot of things in the works (which I will talk about soon…)
Brett´s last blog ..6 weeks 2 days.
Brett,
Glad to hear that you have so much in the works. Yes, please do let us know when you are ready!
Hi Brett,
I’m in NZ, have you made it back down here? Keen for an update, hope things are going really well for you.
@Alanagh,
Hello and welcome! I am jealous
because it is very cold here tonight (it will be -21C, and it is going to keep getting colder until February…)
Where are you located in NZ, if I might ask? Anywhere is good, of course!
We have not made it back down yet – however, it is in the works. Since we’ve been, we have some ideas for new places we want to go when we return.
The old “hindsight is 20:20 thing” applies to vacations too.
Of course, if I have my druthers, our next trip will be one where we settle for good.
